Self portrait assignment woooo!!!

Heeey! So for this assignment I have here an "non-traditional" self portrait! This was so much fun. I had to find something that defined me as a person to be my self portrait, or anything kind of like that. I decided on softball, because I am obsessed with it and live it, play it, practice it 12 months of the year..... so yeah. I made the background all different colors... basically colors that stuck out to me or make me feel happy in some sort of way. Anyways without further ado here is the final piece:

Well... I think my composition is kinda interesting, with the softball in the middle to drive it home. I should try doing something with more of a background next time and see if the objects and its surroundings can play off each other to make a cooler effect.

  2. Hi Angela,

Great job, good use of color variation. I actually get a seasonal sense of space from your background color pallet. Maybe that's coming from your description of how you involved with the sport year-round. Non the less, compositionally this is pretty interesting, I like the overlap of elements. The glow of the ball is working really well also.

You see, the human eye will always direct itself towards, brights and warms, especially when cradled in dark values. So as a director, you've done a good job of "directing" the viewers eye to the most important thing, the softball, and then we can move around from there. The shoelaces are organic and inviting liner directional forces that have the light, dark thing going. Also the warm reddish tone between the left shoe and glove. These elements all help to move the eye around, yet keep us engaged.

I do however feel like your darks got a little mushy and overworked. Given the medium, you could absolutely go back in and brighten and refine the details. I'd like to see some more definition in the glove specifically.

You get me with the ball, but with the background so bright on the left, between that and the lights in the shoe on the left, I go immediately there and skip over the fact that it's a glove. The ball is really beautifully done, keep your viewer around a bit longer with some same attention on the glove. Just brighten it up a bit.

Good choice for your self portrait!

  3. I think this is my strongest work so far, just because it incorporates color and is more of a composition rather than imagined. It needs work still but I think with some care it can be ready for my portfolio!
