Observational Drawing... Assignment!! Whoo!!!

Well it's time for an update!! My assignment was to find a familiar object and draw it in all different ways. My object -which may not really be familiar to everyone else haha- is my handbrace. Well, more accurately my thumb brace, but details details!! ANYWAY. Step one was to Observe the object... my thumb/hand brace... and to draw it in a few different angles. Then on the same piece of paper I was to draw it from memory. Which was not really that easy, and I can't say I didn't cheat a tiny bit (it was only a reflexive glance!!!!).

Now it's time to make the hand brace into a character... I experimented with different ways to sort of evoke an emotion from the hand brace's appearance. Unfortunately, it didn't become sentient for this exercise and the feat was left to my imagination:

and the last step is to show my object interacting with other objects. I saw some other things in my room that looked like it could have relationships to, in some weird way, and went from there:

All right! The end!! :)

  1. I think my doodles are sort of cool. I need to work on my picture taking skills to get more into the shot.

  2. Hi Angela,

I love the end result of your hand brace exercise!! You did a really great job of giving this inanimate object a personality. NIce sense of expression! Also, I was happy to see you doing multiple drawings on a singular sheet of paper, it's so much more interesting to look at in this manner. I'd love to see this "character" developed into a a comic book, or online zine. So fun! Just think of the way out adventures a walking/floating/rides on a skateboard or whatever character could have. What's his personality, ruff and gruff, or Spongebob dopy sweet? Just a thought.

The original studies are really wonderful as well. There's a real movement in your line quality. They're so fluid. This is a great series to include in your portfolio. I might consider eliminating the two middle drawings, doodles, they're not very strong. The first drawing from observation and the final one as a character make a great diptych.
